What is a Dental Crown?
When a tooth is damaged, but the tooth root is intact and healthy, we will recommend a dental crown to restore the function of the tooth. A dental crown is a tooth-colored cap that covers the entire damaged tooth. It strengthens the tooth, protects it from further infection, and improves the aesthetic appearance of the tooth as well. Dental crowns are also used to hold a dental bridge in place and to finish a dental implant procedure.
Why was a Crown Recommended?
A crown is typically recommended when a tooth is damaged beyond repair. A porcelain crown can be used to:
- Cover a tooth after a root canal or implant
- Cover a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored
- Replace a tooth with a large filling
- Add strength to a tooth with little tooth structure remaining
- Fix a cracked tooth
The Treatment Process
A dental crown procedure is typically completed in two office visits. During the first visit, the decay is removed from the teeth and a temporary crown is placed. At the final visit, the permanent crown is placed in the mouth and adjusted for a proper fit. It is important to be gentle with the temporary crown. We recommend avoiding chewy foods and would suggest chewing on the other side of the mouth. If the temporary crown falls out, be sure to contact us as soon as possible.
