Is Your Lifestyle Harming Your Oral Health?
At Muse Dental Studio, your oral health is important to us. We regularly share tips and helpful information to educate our patients on cleaning and caring for their teeth properly. We know that some patients have habits that can negatively impact their current and future oral health. We want to share three common habits that can cause problems:
High Stress
A stressful job or lifestyle can negatively affect your oral health. Patients who experience high stress are commonly diagnosed with bruxism, also known as clenching and grinding teeth. The pressure from clenching and grinding can lead to cracked and chipped teeth and the need for dental treatment, such as crowns and implants.
High Sugar Diet
Do you love sugary foods and beverages? High levels of sugar in your food can lead to problems with tooth decay. You may be surprised to learn that some of your food and beverage habits can cause problems with your oral health. For example, do you love custom coffee drinks with flavored syrups? If you drink one of these a day and savor it over a period of time, you are continuously introducing sugar into your mouth. The levels of harmful bacteria can lead to serious problems over time.
Using Teeth as Tools
One of the most common habits many people have is using their teeth as tools. This includes using your teeth to open packages, rip open bags, tear off tags, and more. Although your tooth enamel is the strongest substance in your body, it is not indestructible. Your teeth were designed to withstand the pressure needed for tasks other than chewing food, making the chance of a problem developing very high. Using teeth as tools can lead to serious problems such as cracked and chipped teeth. Be sure to take the extra time you need to get the right tool.
