Is Your Mouth Giving You A Warning?

Do you find yourself avoiding certain foods and beverages because they cause discomfort to your teeth? If you find yourself cringing every time you eat something extremely cold such as ice cream, there is a very good chance you are experiencing tooth sensitivity. You may also experience this sensation if you eat a mixture of various temperatures at the same time, such as hot coffee and cold fruit with your breakfast. Many people experience tooth sensitivity from time to time, and it is not cause for concern. When tooth sensitivity happens regularly, it can be a warning that you may have an underlying issue with your oral health.

What Can Cause Tooth Sensitivity?

Your teeth are composed of many layers. The outer covering of the tooth is the enamel and the inside is known as the pulp. Although the enamel is the strongest substance in the body, it is not indestructible. When the outer covering of the tooth becomes compromised, tooth sensitivity can be felt due to the nerves on the inside of the tooth becoming exposed. The only circumstance that tooth sensitivity is not typically a problem is after a dental treatment, such as a dental crown. The gums and teeth can remain sensitive for some time after treatment while the mouth is healing.

Ways to Help Tooth Sensitivity

If you develop tooth sensitivity, you can evaluate the way in which you brush your teeth. Using vigorous strokes or a hard-bristled toothbrush can cause damage to tooth enamel. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you are unsure of the proper brushing technique, we will be happy to help during your next appointment. You can also use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity and it has become bothersome or you are concerned, please reach out to our office located in Houston, TX to schedule an appointment. We will be happy to meet with you to evaluate your symptoms and ensure that nothing more serious is occurring. See you soon!

    Information About Wisdom Teeth

Do you still have your wisdom teeth? Contrary to the name, these teeth do not provide any additional wisdom to our patients, although it would be nice if they did! Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last teeth to emerge in your mouth. In the time of our ancestors, these teeth were used to help chew raw meat as well as fruits and vegetables. Now that we cook our food, these teeth are no longer necessary. In fact, many older teens and adults have their wisdom teeth removed.
