How dental insurance works

As we noted above, every policy is a little different. In general, however, most insurance plans work something like this:

• Preventive care (routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays): 100% covered
• Minor restorative services (fillings, etc.): 70 – 80% covered
• Major restorative services (crowns, dentures, etc.): 50% covered

Your policy may have a waiting period before you are eligible to receive certain services. It also likely has an annual maximum, which is the highest dollar amount that your insurance company is willing to pay out for approved services within a calendar year.

In-network vs. out-of-network

An in-network dentist is one who already has a contract with the insurance company and has agreed to specific pricing for specific treatments. Using an in-network dentist is the most economical way to go for patients with dental insurance. Even if a dentist is out-of-network, you may still be able to use your insurance with them, especially if you have a PPO-type plan. Out-of-pocket costs can vary significantly between in-network and out-of-network care providers.

When insurance doesn’t cover a treatment
